How to choose the right urine test strips

Urine test strips are quick and cheap, but only if you buy the right type and store them properly. Here’s what you need to know.

How to choose urine test strips

The short answer

  • Match the number of parameters to what you test for, from single tests up to 10-parameter strips.
  • If you use a urine analyser, buy strips designed for that analyser.
  • Keep the lid on and use strips before their expiry date.
  • Follow the reading times in the instructions for each test pad.
What each pad tests

Common parameters

Parameter What it can indicate
Glucose Possible diabetes or poor glucose control
Protein Possible kidney problems, pre-eclampsia in pregnancy
Blood Possible infection, kidney stones or other conditions
Leukocytes and nitrites Possible urinary tract infection
Ketones Possible diabetic ketoacidosis, fasting or low-carbohydrate intake
pH and specific gravity Acidity of urine and how concentrated it is
Bilirubin and urobilinogen Possible liver or bile duct problems
Important: Strips are a screening tool. Results should always be interpreted alongside the clinical picture, and confirmed by laboratory testing where needed.
Reading the results

Visual or analyser?

Visual reading

Compare the pads to the colour chart on the pot. Low cost and portable, but depends on good lighting and timing.

Analyser reading

A urine analyser reads the strip for you, removing guesswork and printing or storing results.

Match the strips

Analysers need their own compatible strips. Check before ordering.

Storage

Storing strips properly

Lid on

Replace the lid straight away. Moisture and light damage the test pads.

Room temperature

Store as directed on the pot. Don’t keep them somewhere damp like a bathroom.

Check expiry

Write the opening date on the pot, and never use expired strips.

FAQs

Common questions

Which strips are best for UTI screening?

Strips that include leukocytes and nitrites are commonly used. Follow your local guidance on which patients to test.

Can I cut strips or reuse them?

No. Each strip is single use and the pads must not be cut.

Why are my results inconsistent?

Check the expiry date, that the lid has been kept on, and that you’re reading at the right time for each pad.
