Having a defibrillator on site is vital as this medical equipment can help save lives. The purpose of a defibrillator is to rectify an arrhythmia, which is when the heart beats either too slow, too fast or irregularly. A defib is also used when the heartbeat has stopped entirely, and the machine operates by sending an electric pulse to the heart, providing a shock which can restart a normal beating rhythm.

There are 3 different types of Defibrillators. Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator (WCD) and finally an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD). An AED defibrillator is most used in public places when a person can suffer from a sudden cardiac arrest.

To help make AED defibrillators easily operated for an untrained member of the public attempting to save another person’s life, an AED defibrillator is available either as a Semi-Automatic Defibrillator, or a Fully Automatic Defibrillator. The difference between the two options is that a Semi-Automatic Defib requires a person to push a button when a shock is required whereas, a Fully-Automatic AED defib does not and will automatically send a shock if an appropriate shockable heart rhythm is detected.Read more
