What’s inside
Everything on the poster
- Make the area safe. Keep people away from the spill.
- Put on PPE. Disposable gloves and apron as a minimum; add eye protection if there is a risk of splashing.
- Use the spill kit. Follow the spill kit instructions. Kits usually contain absorbent granules or a chlorine-releasing product.
- Leave it for the stated contact time. Do not rush this step.
- Scoop up and dispose. Use the scoop and scraper, and put everything in the correct clinical waste bag.
- Clean the area. Clean with detergent and water, then dry. Check the surface can tolerate chlorine before using it.
- Take off PPE and wash your hands. Remove gloves and apron, dispose of them as clinical waste, then wash your hands.
- Replace the spill kit. Restock or replace the kit so it is ready for next time.
Take care
Do not use chlorine-releasing products directly on urine, as this can release chlorine gas. Absorb urine first, following your policy.
