Which defib pads do I need?

The short answer

  • Pads only fit their own AED family. Check the make and model on your defibrillator before ordering.
  • Check the expiry date on the pads fitted to your AED, and replace them before they expire.
  • Replace pads after every use, or if the packet has been opened or damaged.
  • Think about children. Some AEDs use separate paediatric pads, others use a child key or a child mode. Check your manufacturer’s instructions.

Keep your AED rescue-ready

Weekly

Check the status light

Most AEDs show a ready indicator. Check it regularly and log the check.

Monthly

Check expiry dates

Note the expiry date of pads and battery on your checklist, and order replacements in good time.

After use

Replace straight away

Fit a new set of pads after any use, and keep a spare set with the AED.

Top tip: Store a spare set of pads with your defibrillator, not in a stock cupboard. In an emergency you need them where the AED is.

FAQs

Common questions

Can I use adult pads on a child?

Follow your AED manufacturer’s instructions and your resuscitation training. Some AEDs need separate paediatric pads, some use a child key or child mode, and some universal pads can be used for both.

How long do defib pads last?

Pads carry an expiry date on the packet, and the shelf life varies by brand. Check the date when your pads arrive and add it to your checklist.
