How to take a reading

  1. Same time every day. Read the thermometer at the same time each working day, ideally first thing in the morning.
  2. Record three numbers. Write down the current, minimum and maximum temperatures.
  3. Reset the thermometer. Reset the min/max memory after recording, and tick the reset column.
  4. Initial the row. The person taking the reading initials the log.
  5. Act on anything outside +2°C to +8°C. Follow your cold chain breach procedure straight away (see box below).
Out of range? If any reading is outside +2°C to +8°C: label the fridge "Do not use", keep the vaccines in the fridge, do not discard anything yet, record the readings and how long they were out of range, and contact your local screening and immunisation team or the vaccine manufacturer for advice. Our free Cold chain breach action plan walks you through each step.

Good fridge practice

  • Use a pharmaceutical (vaccine) fridge, not a domestic one
  • Keep the fridge at least two-thirds full but leave space for air to circulate
  • Do not store food, drink or specimens in the vaccine fridge
  • Keep the plug switched on, labelled and out of reach of being knocked
  • Use a second, independent data logger as back-up
  • Calibrate or replace thermometers in line with the manufacturer's guidance
  • Keep completed logs for as long as your local policy requires
Source Refer to "Immunisation against infectious disease" (the Green Book), Chapter 3, for the full national guidance on storing and handling vaccines.
